The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr. Nyesom Wike, has announced comprehensive plans to reform Abuja’s transportation sector, emphasizing improvements in safety, structure, and commuter experience.
Wike disclosed this on Friday during an inspection tour of the completed Kugbo and Mabushi Bus and Taxi Terminals, which are set for inauguration as part of activities marking President Bola Tinubu’s second year in office.
“We are putting final touches on the reforms that will transform the FCT’s transport system,” Wike said. “Obviously, a lot of things will happen in the transport sector in the FCT. There will be a lot of reforms.”
He emphasized the importance of regulation and traceability in the taxi system to enhance public safety. “As part of security measures, we must know those involved in the taxi business and what colour to use, so that if anything happens, we will be able to identify them,” he explained. “Just be assured that we are doing everything possible to strengthen our transportation system.”
The minister revealed that a dedicated committee is already working on the reforms, which will be implemented ahead of the terminals’ formal opening.

In addition to the terminals, Wike also inspected the newly completed access road to the Giri District, also ready for commissioning. He confirmed that the FCT Administration is taking steps to phase out unregulated roadside motor parks as part of the ongoing restructuring efforts.
Speaking on the quality of the projects, Wike expressed satisfaction but noted that some minor corrections had been identified. “I am satisfied with the delivery, though I have pointed out some areas that need to be corrected,” he said, commending the contractors for their effort.
He also reiterated his support for local contractors, saying, “We will continue to support local contractors to deliver quality projects for Nigerians.”
The Kugbo, Mabushi, and Central Area Bus and Taxi Terminals are central to the FCT’s broader transportation upgrade. While the Kugbo and Mabushi terminals are complete and ready for use, the Central Area terminal remains under construction.
Looking ahead, Wike disclosed plans for additional infrastructure. “We are also planning to construct two more terminals one in Bwari and another in Gwagwalada to ensure more coverage and convenience for commuters,” he said.
