Treat Workers Like Partners, Not As Tools — Atiku Urges Government on Workers’ Day

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has commended Nigerian workers for their resilience and commitment to nation-building, calling on the Federal Government to treat them as equal partners in the country’s development rather than mere instruments of economic growth.

In a statement issued to mark the 2025 Workers’ Day celebration on Thursday, Atiku praised the dedication of Nigerian workers despite facing difficult economic conditions and poor remuneration.

“The Nigerian worker remains the indomitable engine driving our nation towards the long-anticipated promise of prosperity,” Atiku stated.

He lamented the failure of those in positions of power to respond meaningfully to the sacrifices made by workers across the country.

“In the face of persistent hardship and inadequate remuneration, Nigerian workers have continued to shoulder the burdens of our economic ambitions with quiet heroism,” he said. “It is deeply disheartening that those entrusted with the responsibilities of governance and policymaking have failed to respond to this unwavering dedication with tangible support and justice.”

Describing workers as “the heart and strength of the nation,” Atiku called for robust policies that protect workers’ rights, dignity, and entitlements.

“The labour force is the soul of our nation. It is both the face and the force of the people. Therefore, it is imperative that governments and employers alike put in place robust safeguards to uphold the dignity, rights, and entitlements rightfully due to every worker,” he stressed.

He further emphasized that national progress depends on cooperation between the government, employers, and the labour force.

“I urge policymakers to take inspiration from the theme of this year’s celebration and to engage with the labour force not as a mere instrument but as an equal partner in the journey towards national greatness,” Atiku concluded.

His message aligns with ongoing calls for improved labour conditions and a renewed focus on social justice in governance.
