Constructed in 1991 by Julius Berger Nigeria PLC, the ICC has historically served as Nigeria’s premier venue for international conferences, summits, and high-profile events. However, over the years, the facility fell into disrepair, diminishing its status and utility. Recognizing its significance, President Bola Tinubu ordered a comprehensive rehabilitation after describing its deteriorated state as an “eyesore” during the ECOWAS Parliament inauguration in April 2024.

The FCT Administration, under Minister Wike’s supervision, allocated ₦39 billion for the renovation, entrusting Julius Berger with the project. As of March 2025, the renovation had reached 70-80% completion, with all necessary materials on-site to ensure timely delivery.

The upgraded facility is expected to feature state-of-the-art amenities, positioning it as a world-class conference center.

The FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike with other top officials was there on monday to see the level of progress.

Beyond the ICC, Minister Wike has been instrumental in advancing several infrastructure projects across the FCT. These include the extension of Obafemi Awolowo Way (N5) from Life Camp Junction to Ring Road III, the development of road networks in Gishiri village and Katampe District, and the construction of the N16 Interchange at NICON Junction . These projects aim to enhance connectivity, reduce traffic congestion, and promote urban renewal in Abuja.

The renovated ICC is slated for commissioning in May 2025, coinciding with President Tinubu’s second year in office . This milestone will not only symbolize Nigeria’s commitment to infrastructural development but also reinforce Abuja’s status as a hub for international diplomacy and business.

Minister Wike’s proactive approach to infrastructure development reflects a broader vision of transforming the FCT into a model capital city, aligning with national aspirations for progress and modernization.
