Manchester United took a commanding step toward the UEFA Europa League final with a resounding 3-0 victory over Athletic Bilbao at San Mamés. Goals from Casemiro and a brace by Bruno Fernandes secured the win, leaving United in a strong position ahead of the second leg at Old Trafford.
The match turned in United’s favor in the 30th minute when Casemiro headed in the opener following a corner. Shortly after, Athletic’s Dani Vivian received a red card for a foul on Joshua Zirkzee, leading to a penalty that Fernandes converted. Fernandes added his second just before halftime, capitalizing on a swift counterattack. Despite Athletic’s early pressure, United controlled the game after the sending-off, maintaining their lead comfortably in the second half.

There have been plenty of poor performances and disappointing losses for United under Amorim but there has also been the odd eye-catching result.
They won 2-1 at rivals Manchester City in December, drew 2-2 with Liverpool and knocked Arsenal out of the FA Cup in January and thrashed Real Sociedad 4-1 in Europe.
But for Amorim this was the most impressive of the lot, saying: “I think best result because nobody expected this.
