Chelsea have re-entered the race to sign Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen ahead of the 2025 summer transfer window, as Manchester United reportedly withdraw from the chase for the prolific forward.
Football Transfers reports that Osimhen, who is currently on loan at Galatasaray from Napoli, has set his sights on a move to Stamford Bridge. The 26-year-old striker has enjoyed a stellar season in Turkey, scoring 28 goals and providing five assists in 32 appearances. His performances have reaffirmed his status as one of the most lethal centre-forwards in world football.
Chelsea were close to securing Osimhen’s services in 2024 under then-manager Enzo Maresca but failed to reach a final agreement with Napoli, resulting in the loan move to Galatasaray. With the west London club prioritising a new striker this summer, they are now poised to reignite their pursuit of the Super Eagles star.
Osimhen’s contract with Napoli includes a release clause reported to be in the range of €75-80 million. While several European giants had expressed interest in triggering the clause, it appears Chelsea now lead the race, with the player himself favouring a move to the Premier League side.
Meanwhile, Manchester United have made a surprise U-turn on their interest in Osimhen. Despite widespread speculation and reports of a potential “agreement in principle,” respected journalist David Ornstein has confirmed that the striker is not on United’s transfer radar.
The Red Devils were previously linked with the Nigerian international as part of a broader squad overhaul. Reports had suggested that Osimhen could replace current forwards Rasmus Højlund or Joshua Zirkzee. However, United’s uncertain European qualification status and a renewed focus on internal development have reportedly shifted the club’s strategy away from high-profile signings.
Højlund, despite a relatively modest eight-goal campaign, is expected to remain a central figure in Erik ten Hag’s long-term plans, while the club may also look to promote talent from within.
Chelsea’s pursuit of Osimhen aligns with their broader strategy of strengthening their attacking options. Although Nicolas Jackson has returned from a hamstring injury, the Blues are intent on bringing in a more prolific goalscorer to bolster their frontline ahead of the 2025–26 campaign.
In addition to Osimhen, Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap has emerged as another key target for Chelsea, further underscoring their commitment to revamping their strike force this summer.
