The Speaker of the House of Representatives Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, has congratulated Nigeria’s female Under-17 national team, the Flamingos on their Women’s World Cup win, saying it is as a result of Nigeria’s resilient spirit.
Speaker Abbas, who used a popular Nigerian parlance, “Naija no dey carry last,” said the average Nigerian is born to break barriers and conquer territories.
Nigeria’s Flamingos on Saturday defeated Japan 2-1 in the final of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup to become the first African nation to lift the prestigious trophy. The triumph also makes Nigeria the first African country to win the FIFA U-17 World Cup in both the men’s and women’s categories.
The Flamingos further became the first team in the competition’s history to lose their opening match and still go on to claim the title, having recovered from a 2-1 group-stage defeat to Poland.
The Speaker, in a congratulatory message issued through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Musa Abdullahi Krishi, said the House of Representatives is proud of the record-breaking feat of the female national team, adding that Nigerians have another reason to celebrate the country.
Speaker Abbas commended the Flamingos, the management, and the crew for being patriotic to Nigeria and good ambassadors of the country at a global stage.
The Speaker urged the Nigerian Government to honour the Flamingos, noting the country must continue to appreciate its talents and their loyalty to the country.
Speaker Abbas wishes the Flamingos and Nigerians a happy celebration.
