Plateau State University Suspends Examination Over Gunmen Attacks

The renewed gunmen attacks in Mangu and Bokkos areas of Plateau State have forced the management of  Plateau State University, Bokkos (PSU) immediately close the institution.

Armed herdsmen on Thursday night invaded the two communities with barrage of gunfire that resulted in the death of 15 persons including a 200 level Computer Science student of PSU.

The university which is in the middle of its first semester examinations had to hurriedly shutdown the institution to avert further loss of lives of its student and staff.

In a statement issued by its Registrar, Yakub Ayuba, the school will be temporarily closed for 10 days pending an improved security in the area.

The statement reads in part:

“Following the sad incident that occurred in Plateau State University, Bokkos, and the surrounding communities on Friday, 19th April 2024, and in view of the psychological effect of the unfortunate incident on students and staff of the university, the management has taken the painful decision to close the university for 10 days with effect from April 19, 2024

This decision is to allow the security situation to improve and to lessen the human risk to the university community. Accordingly, the ongoing first semester examinations are hereby suspended and will resume on Thursday, 2nd May 2024.”

“The management has made available buses to convey students who may be stranded from the university to Barkin Ladi.”

Despite efforts of the state government to stem the rising tide of violence in the state series of attacks have been recorded in recent months which has led to over 200 deaths and property and farm produce worth several millions of Naira destroyed.

Natives in the north central state have been locked in crisis with Fulani cattle herders who are usually armed with assault rifles.
