JUST IN: NUPENG Calls-off Nationwide Strike as Dangote Refinery Agrees to Unionise

The Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has called off its two-day nationwide strike after the union reached truce with the management of Dangote Refinery limited.

Williams Akporeha, the National President of NUPENG told journalists that Dangote Refinery has agreed to allow its workers join the union.

He revealed that Sayyu Dantata, the who led the Dangote team in the meeting brokered by the Department of State Services (DSS) agreed to the terms pushed by NUPENG to allow their truck drivers to unionise.

According to him, “We have suspended the strike. The Dangote refinery has agreed to unionise its drivers. We signed an agreement.”

NUPENG members had embarked on the industrial action to press home their demand that drivers of the newly ordered 4000 CNG truck by Dangote Refinery be allowed to join labour unions in the oil and gas sector in line with labour laws.

It was earlier revealed that the management of Dangote Refinery had given the condition that its newly employed 4000 drivers would not join any labour union.

The federal government had called on the union to shelve the strike and negotiate with the government and Dangote Refinery, the union, however, insisted on the strike pending agreement with the Dangote group.

The strike paralysed movement across the country on Tuesday when many braches joined the strike.
