The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, on Friday announced that the Nigeria Police Force has disbursed a total of ₦22,978,602,488.25 to the families and next of kin of 8,311 deceased police officers since he assumed office.
The IGP made this known during a cheque presentation ceremony held in Abuja, where ₦2 billion was presented to 1,235 beneficiaries under the Group Life Assurance Scheme and the IGP Family Welfare Scheme. The payments cover claims from 2018 to 2024.
While addressing attendees, Egbetokun stated, “The Nigeria Police Force is built on the pillars of service, integrity, and sacrifice. Our officers face immense risks daily to keep the nation safe. While no compensation can replace a lost life, we hope these benefits provide some comfort and hope to the families.”
He emphasized that the death of any police officer is not only a loss to the Force but to the entire nation. He further reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to prioritizing the welfare of police personnel and their families.

“This disbursement marks the third phase in our ongoing effort to clear longstanding arrears of benefit claims,” he said.
Also speaking at the event, the Force Insurance Officer, CSP Lydia Ameh, described the initiative as a reflection of the Inspector-General’s “fatherly love and unwavering commitment to the welfare of police personnel and their families.”
Ameh praised Egbetokun’s leadership, noting his consistent and compassionate approach to reforms within the Force. “Some of these insurance claims date as far back as 2015, 2016, and other years like 2018, 2019, 2021, and 2022. The IGP has made it a point of duty to ensure these arrears are cleared,” she said.
The initiative comes amid growing calls for improved welfare and morale-boosting measures for security personnel across the country. Security experts have praised the IGP’s move as a step toward institutional accountability and officer motivation.
Analysts suggest that such welfare efforts, if sustained, could improve operational performance and restore trust in the Force’s leadership.
