The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has clarified the circumstances surrounding the arrest of Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, citing multiple petitions alleging financial misconduct.
In an official statement, the Commission said Otse was invited following “a series of petitions bordering on sundry issues of alleged financial crimes.” Despite several invitations sent through known addresses and communication channels, the social media influencer reportedly refused to honour the summons.
“The petitions pertain to grave allegations of financial malfeasance which cannot be ignored by the Commission,” the EFCC stated.
Addressing widespread public speculation, the Commission dismissed claims that the arrest was motivated by Otse’s outspoken criticism of its operations. “While such conduct is condemnable, his arrest was not informed by such attacks,” the EFCC emphasized, adding that “the relevant law enforcement agency will be allowed to look into them.”

The anti-graft agency confirmed that a valid remand order was obtained and that Otse is being held in accordance with the law. “The EFCC has a lawful right to hold Otse in custody like any other suspect being investigated by the Commission,” the statement noted.
He has been granted administrative bail and, according to the Commission, “will be released after fulfilling all the bail conditions.”
The EFCC acknowledged the public interest in the case and encouraged continued civic engagement. “The passion, enthusiasm and torrential reactions to all of its activities are welcome. However, insinuations about its motive in carrying out its assignment should no longer continue,” the Commission stated.
It reiterated its commitment to executing its mandate without bias or interference. “The EFCC should be allowed to do its job without fear or favour. As soon as investigations are concluded, charges will be filed.”
