A Finnish District Court has convicted Mr. Simon Ekpa of terrorism and sentenced him to a six year prison term.
Ekpa, the self-proclaimed leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Government in Exile has been standing trial for terrorism related crimes after he was arrested on November 21, 2024.
The Finnish National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) charged the convict of inciting terrorism and promoting violence through social media, activity that was believed to have contributed to unrest in southeastern Nigeria.
Ekpa was behind the Monday sit-at-home order that crippled economic activities in the Southeast and also led to the death of several innocent citizens who fell victims of the unknown gunmen who unleashed unprecedented violence on citizens in their bid to enforce the sit-at-home order.

After his arrest, Simon Ekpa was remanded in custody by the Päijät-Häme District Court, which determined that the charge was based on “public incitement to commit a crime with terrorist intent”, alleged offenses dating from August 2021 to November 2024.
As part of the terrorist investigation, the Finnish government froze Ekpa’s assets and that of his associates.
