Kalu in Geneva for IPU Meeting

 

The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu has arrived in Geneva, Switzerland for the 148th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).

 

A statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Levinus Nwabughiogu stated that Kalu left Nigeria late Thursday and arrived in Geneva Friday morning.

 

This year’s IPU meetings will be held at the International Conference Centre of Geneva, (ICCG), Switzerland from Saturday, March 23, to Wednesday, March, 27, 2024

 

It will be recalled that at the last edition of the IPU which held in Luanda, Angola, Nigeria broke a 59-year-old jinx when the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio was elected into the Executive Committee of the global parliamentary body via a motion moved by Kalu at the event.

 

The last time Nigeria had the privilege to be in the Executive Committee of IPU was in 1964.

 

The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), a global organization of national parliaments with the membership of 179 out of 193 countries of the world was founded in 1889.

 

The body is central to promoting peace through parliamentary diplomacy and dialogue.

 

Kalu who is expected to participate fully in the proceedings of the world parliamentary organization will return to Nigeria at the end of the programme.
