Police operatives in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State have arrested one Mr. Ekere Ebong, 55, the lawyer seen brutalizing his wife in now viral online video.
The Akwa Ibom Police Command spokesman, SP Odiko Macdon in a statement issued in Uyo on Monday confirmed that the lawyer was arrested in his Ewet Housing Estate residence.
The police confirmed that Ebong is a habitual wife beater and that the incident seen online was just one of the various episodes he perpetrated against his wife who is said to be a practicing pharmacist in the Akaw Ibom State capital.
The police statement reads in part:
“The suspect assaulted his wife, and dehumanised her, leading to various grievous injuries. He is a known habitual perpetrator of violent acts against his wife over the years.”
Earlier, the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) had reacted to the video and confirmed that Mr. Ebong is indeed a lawyer.
According to a statement issued by the National Publicity Secretary of the NBA, Akorede Habeeb Lawal, the NBA President, NBA President Y.C Maikyau, SAN has directed that the matter be properly investigated by the Uyo Branch of the NBA and subsequently brief the national body for further action.
Feelers from the NBA indicate that its Human Rights Committee was already awaiting the outcome of the investigations.
