NNPP Defections Boost APC Ahead of 2027 as Senator Kawu Sumaila, Hon. Rurum, Others Join Ruling Party
In a significant political shake-up in Kano State, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has officially welcomed a wave of high-profile defectors from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), including Senator Kawu Sumaila and Hon. Kabiru Alasan Rurum, into its ranks.
Senator Sumaila, who represents the Kano South Senatorial District, joins the APC alongside sitting members of the House of Representatives led by Rurum, a former Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly. Also joining are former members of the National Assembly, Dr. Abdullahi Baffa Bichi—the immediate past Secretary to the Kano State Government—former commissioners, and other key NNPP stakeholders.

“This is a major boost for our great party,” declared APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, in a statement. “We applaud this decision and assure the incoming leaders and their teeming supporters of effective accommodation in the APC family.”
The APC sees this mass defection as not only a validation of its political strength in Kano but also as an endorsement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership and reform agenda. “This development will further galvanize support for the administration’s unprecedented multi-sector reforms,” the statement added.
With Kano being a critical battleground in Nigerian politics, the APC is already looking ahead. The party believes this influx of political heavyweights from the NNPP will position it for an “overwhelming victory” in the 2027 general elections.
