FG Drops Treason Charges Against 150 #EndBadGovernance Protesters

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has dismissed  all charges, including treason, preferred against 150 Nigerians for taking part in the recently held #EndBadGovernance protests.

The Inspector General of Police (IGP)had arrested and slammed treason charges on some Nigerian youths, including minors  for protesting against the government of President Bola Tinubu.

Dismissing the charges on Tuesday, Justice Obiora Egwuatu said that the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Olasunkanmi Fagbemi, SAN, had withdrawn the charges  on behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria.

The Attorney General was represented in court by the Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation (DPPF), M.D. Abubakar.

The DPPF at the court proceeding announced that in line with his powers under Section 174 of the 1999 Constitution to take over the case from the Inspector General of Police

The lawyers of the accused and the federal government raised no objections to the position of the DPPF, Justice Egwuatu  subsequently granted the request and struck out the charges.

FACTSHEET reports that President Bola Tinubu on Monday ordered that all the charges preferred against some minors by the police be dropped immediately and all the security agencies involved in the ordeal of the minors investigated.
