The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has made good its ultimatum to the Federal Government of Nigeria to embark on two weeks warning strike over the inability of the government to meet the union’s demands.
According to press statement the union shared on Sunday and signed by its National President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, the strike action is slated to take effect from 12 midnight on Sunday October 12, 2025.
FACTSHEET reported that the ASUU President had announced that there was no going back on the proposed strike due to “the slow response” of the government to ASUU demands.
In the Sunday media statement, the union noted that the Federal Government had consistently ignored its requests including the stoppage of the “victimization” of its members in Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO), Prince Abubakar Audu University (formerly Kogi State University, Anyangba), and the Lagos State University (LASU).
Central to the union’s demands is the implementation of the 2009 ASUU/FGN agreement on proper funding and revitalization of Nigerian universities.

Justifying the latest strike, Prof. Chris Piwuna, said the decision became necessary following what he described as the government’s “insincerity and deliberate foot-dragging” in ongoing negotiations
The ASUU President explained that the two-week industrial action was intended as a window for the government to conclude discussions on unresolved issues, including the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement, funding for public universities, and the payment of withheld salaries and earned allowances.
“The government has shown no genuine commitment to addressing the issues affecting our universities. We have exercised patience and engaged constructively, but their attitude has made this step unavoidable,” he said.
The union subsequently directed all its members across the country to withdraw their services immediately, stressing that academic activities should remain suspended until further notice or until the expiration of the warning strike period.
