Finance Minister Didn’t Suffer Stroke, just ‘Indisposed,’ Receiving Treatment at Abuja Home-Presidency

The Presidency has denied news reports  that the Minister of Finance, Mr. Wale Edun has suffered stroke and may be replaced by President Bola Tinubu.

A senior official at the presidential villa who spoke on the condition of anonymity to the Nation newspaper also denied that the ailing minster has been flown abroad for treatment.

The source, however, admitted that Mr. Edun is “down” but said that he was being treated by Nigerian doctors at his Abuja residence.

“Yes, he’s indisposed. He’s sick, which is a bit serious, but it’s not stroke. As I’m talking to you, he’s in his house. He has not been flown anywhere. Of course, he might seek medical attention elsewhere if the doctors say that is necessary. But he doesn’t have stroke. That’s why we said he is only indisposed,” the official told the newspaper.

“He’s being attended to by Nigerian doctors. They’re monitoring him, and if there’s a need for medical care outside Nigeria, he will go. But for now, he’s still at home. There are no plans to replace him” the official said.

Earlier, Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, confirmed that the minister was “indisposed,” but was receiving treatment in an undisclosed hospital.

According to Onanuga, “he’s indisposed. Wale Edun is about 69 years old. He suddenly fell ill. As we are talking, he is in Nigeria. He is recuperating. He’s around.”

Nigerians have expressed concern over the health of Mr. Edun when it was disclosed that the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Olayemi Cardoso will stand in for the finance minister in a high-level engagement with the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Monday (today) in Washington DC.

The minister of State for Finance, Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite will join the high-level delegation as a member.
