Federal High Court Orders Arrest, Detention of Former INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu

A Federal High Court sitting in Osogbo, Osun State has ordered the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun to arrest of the immediate past Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Mahmood Yakubu for contempt of court.

The court order which came barely 24 hours after Yakubu served out his second tenure as the Chairman of Nigeria’s electoral umpire stems from a suit filed by Action Alliance (AA), challenging INEC and its Chairman for not complying the with a judgement earlier delivered by Justice Funmilola Demi-Ajayi in suit number FHC/OS/CS/194/2024.

The court had ordered INEC to publish the names of the National Chairman of the Action Alliance, Adekunle Rufai Omoaje, and other members of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) on the INEC portal, an order INEC flagrantly flouted.

The court ruled that the elective convention of the party held on the 7th of October, 2023 which produced Omoaje as the national chairman of the party and other NEC members of the party was authentic as it was properly monitored and supervised by officials of INEC in accordance with the party’s constitution and extant electoral laws.

Despite the claims by INEC that it had complied with the court ruling, the party disagreed with the commission, as the name of Omoaje was yet to be uploaded on the commission’s website despite the orders of the Court.
