Barely Five Months After, NNPCL Again Shuts down of Port Harcourt Refinery for Maintenance

Barely five months after it announced the revival of the Port Harcourt Refining Company Limited (PHRC), the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has again announced it will shutdown the facility for “planned maintenance.’

According to a statement issued in Abuja on Saturday by the Chief Corporate Communications Officer of the NNPCL, Olufemi Soneye, the “scheduled” operation will commence immediately.

“The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) wishes to inform the general public that the Port Harcourt Refining Company (PHRC) will undergo a planned maintenance shutdown.

his scheduled maintenance and sustainability assessment will commence on May 24, 2025.

“We are working closely with all relevant stakeholders, including the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), to ensure the maintenance and assessment activities are carried out efficiently and transparently.

“NNPC Ltd remains steadfast in its commitment to delivering sustainable energy security for Nigeria.

“Further updates will be provided regularly through our official channels, including our website, media platforms, and public statements,” the statement read.

On November 26, 2024 Mr, Sonenye had in a statement announced the “ historic moment”  as the Port Harcourt refinery according to him came on stream once more after over two decades of neglect.

Mr. Sonenye had emphatically announced that “Today marks a monumental achievement for Nigeria as the Port Harcourt Refinery officially commences crude oil processing.

“This groundbreaking milestone signifies a new era of energy independence and economic growth for our nation.

“Hearty congratulations to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the NNPC Board, and the exceptional leadership of GCEO Mele Kyari for their unwavering commitment to this transformative project. Together, we are reshaping Nigeria’s energy future!”
