Anambra House of Assembly Suspends Member for Revealing Members Pay Package, Allowances

The Anambra State House of Assembly has suspended the Hon. Bernard Udemezue for allegedly disclosing the pay package of members of the House.

The suspension of the lawmaker will according to the leadership of the House will last for an initial period of three months.

Hon. Udemezue who represents Ayamelum State Constituency was accused of making a social media post on WhatsApp group populated by non-members of the House where he revealed the monthly pay package of the members.

The lawmaker was alleged to have also revealed that he receives N10 million quarterly from the state government for constituency projects.

The action of the lawmaker was said to have elicited condemnation from both the leadership of the House and his colleagues. His conduct led to a special investigative committee chaired by the House Committee Chairman of the House Committee on Rules, Business, Ethics and Privileges, Hon. Ikenna Ofodeme who also doubles as the Majority Leader of the House.

During Tuesday plenary the committee while submitting its report recommended the suspension of the lawmaker for three months. The committee while condemning the action of the lawmaker described Hon. Udemezue’s  conduct as unparliamentary, and recommended that he should not be seen within the Assembly for the period of the suspension.

The suspended lawmaker has insisted that he did nothing wrong  describing his suspension as victimization.

Hon. Udemezue reiterated that his sole aim of revealing his emoluments was to update his constituents on his stay in the Assembly. The lawmaker accused some of his colleagues pocketing their constituency project funds insisting that his revelation angered them.
