Nigerian Defence Policy Scholar, Prof Aja Akpuru-Aja Dies at 66

One of Nigeria’s leading scholars in Defence Policy, Strategic Studies and Conflict Resolution, Prof. Aja Akpuru-Aja is dead.

The late scholar was aged 66 years.

A source from Okposi, the home town of the late scholar told FACTSHEET that the deceased passed away in one of the teaching hospitals in Ebonyi State where he had driven himself to for a medical checkup.

Aja Akpuru-Aja was a Professor  of Political Science at Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu and also served as a Directing Scholar at Nigeria’s highest Think Tank and leadership training institution, The Nigerian Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies(NIPSS)  Kuru, in Plateau State.

Professor Akpuru-Aja was born in 1958 in his home town of Okposi Okwu, in the Ohaozara LGA of Ebonyi State

He had his primary education in Okposi from where he proceeded to the Government College Afikpo and completed his secondary education in 1976.

He obtained his first degree in History from the University of Port Harcourt in 1982, and in 1984 he earned his M.Sc in International Relations and Strategic Studies from the then University of Ife, (now Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife).

Late Prof Aja Akpuru returned to the University of Port Harcourt where he completed his PhD in 1996.

He joined Abia State University, Uturu as an Assistant Lecturer and through sterling scholarship and dint of hard work attained the position of Professor in 2007.

There was no official statement from either the family or Abia State University, Uturu at press time.
