Feb 3 Rerun Elections: Court Sacks Ebonyi PDP Candidate, Orders Fresh Primary Election

A Federal High Court sitting in Abakaliki on barely 72hours to the Saturday February 3 scheduled rerun election in Ebonyi South Senatorial District has nullified the candidacy of  Mr. Silas Onu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Delivering judgement on Thursday a suit filed by some members of the PDP in the state, Justice Hyeladziya Ngajiwa, ruled that Mr. Onu’s candidate was invalid as the PDP failed to conduct the mandatory 3-man adhoc ward delegates as well as one man National Delegate that were required to elect candidates at the primary election.

The court subsequently ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to strike out Mr. Onu’s name from the list of contestants in the rerun election.

The court further ruled that the remedy for the PDP was to either conduct fresh primary election in line with extant electoral guidelines or present a consensus candidate for the election.

The leadership of the PDP in both the state and the National Headquarters at press time has not reacted to the court ruling.
