South Africa’s goalkeeper and captain, Ronwen Williams has pleaded with Africans, especially at the World Cup to support the team at the mundial tournament.
His pleas follows the lack of support from Africans both in Mexico and across the social media during the World Cup opening match, between co-hosts Mexico and South Africa, a match that ended 2-0 in favour of the hosts to the delight of Africans.
Williams expressed deep disappointment over the situation.

Speaking to journalists after the match, Williams said, “Africans have always supported other African countries in every World Cup tournament, but I can’t figure out why our own case is different,” Williams said. “Many Africans supported Mexico, not us, the South Africans. We almost shed tears, but it’s truly sad.”
“As Africans, let’s stand for each other, let’s stand together.”
South Africa has come under some bad light among Africans, especially blacks over the perennial xenophobic attacks on African migrants who are indiscriminately hacked to death on the streets of South Africa while their government looks on without any interference.
Social media users in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and Zimbabwe and other African countries have taken a swipe at the South Africa team and published various contents expressing their support to South Africa’s opponents at the World Cup.
