Vice President, Kashim Shetima is set to visit his home state of Borno over the flood that has sacked more than half of the state capital, Maidugiri.
The visit is on the instance of President Bola Tinubu who is still outside the country.
Maidugiri has been nearly submerged after it worst flood in 30 years which was occasioned by the overflow of the Alau Dam.
Speaking in Abuja on Tuesday, VP Shettima who was attending the 17th Annual Banking and Finance Conference (CIBN) with the theme,” Accelerated Economic Growth and Development: the state of play and the way forward,” announced that President Bola Tinubu has directed him o proceed to Maidugiri immediately for on-the spot-assessment of the impact of the flood.
He said, “After this meeting with the consent of the President, I will rush to Maiduguri. The whole city has been overtaken by flood
“It is not peculiar to one part of the country. We are facing this challenges right from Bayelsa to Sokoto.
“Be rest assured that the President has the nation at heart and will do whatever it takes to salvage the state of affairs.”
Earlier, President Tinubu through a statement issued by his Special Adviser, Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga expressed deep concern over the flood incident.
The flood has displaced residents and sacked most public facilities including hospitals, schools and markets in the city. The flood according to residents has brought the economy of the state to a standstill
Condoling with residents of the state, Onanuga said that President Tinubu has directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), security agencies and other revant parastaals of the government to immediately move in to assists residents and the state government in managing the disaster.
