The Senate On Wednesday voted for the removal of the Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), Danladi Umar from office.
The removal of CCT Chairman was in line with Section 157(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), which stated the procedure for the removal of the Chairman of the CCT.
The removal was sequel to a motion moved by the Senate Leader, Senator Michael Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti).
Moving the motion, Senator Bamidele stated that, the “Senate has been inundated with serious of petitions and allegations of corruption/misconduct against the Chairman, a situation that necessitated the 9th Senate, through the Senate Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct and Public Petitions to invite him to serious of investigative hearings.”
The motion further alleged that the removed Chairman was in the habit of absenteeism and was away from his duty post for one month without recusing himself.
The Senate Leader further told the Senate that it was based on the plethora of accusations against the CCT Chairman that prompted President Bola Tinubu to nominate Mr. Abdullahi Usman Bello to replace Danladi Umar.
The President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio after the presentation of Senator Bamidele allowed a debate on the motion and thereafter put the matter to vote wherefor, 74 Senators out of the 84 senators in plenary voted for the removal of the CCT Chairman, while 10 lawmaker voted against it.
Senator Akpabio subsequently ruled in favour of the removal of the CCT Chairman.
