PDP Suffers More Blows as Bauchi Senator, Three Kaduna Reps Decamp to APC

 

 

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Tuesday suffered multiple blows as four members of the National Assembly announced their defection from the party to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

In the Senate, Senator Kaila Dahuwa Samaila, the lawmaker representing Bauchi North Senatorial District defected to the APC.

His defection was formally announced at plenary as his letter of defection addressed to the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio was read on the floor.

The lawmaker blamed the prolonged internal crises within the PDP as the reason for his decision to leave the party. The PDP’s strength in the Senate has now shrunk with 27 lawmakers, while the APC now has 74 lawmakers.

In the House of Representatives, three Kaduna lawmakers also announced that they have dumped the PDP for the APC.

The lawmakers are, Hon. Abdulkarim Ahmed (Kaduna South), Hon. Aliyu Mustapha (Ikara/Kubau), and Hon.  Sadiq Ango-Abdullahi (Sabon Gari).

Announcing their defection through a letter addressed to the Speaker, Rt. Hon Abbas Tajudeen, the three lawmakers cited the “lingering crisis” in the PDP as the reason for their defection.

FACTSHEET reports that the governor of Enugu State, Mr. Peter Mbah had earlier in the day announced his defection to the APC. With Mbah’s  defection, the PDP which as at 2019 had five PDP governors now has none in the Southeast geopolitical zone.

The party has been riddled with leadership crisis since the 2023 general elections.
