This statement reflects Obasanjo’s belief that Obi embodies the qualities Nigeria currently needs, vision, accountability, and a focus on sustainable development.

Obasanjo emphasized that Nigeria’s most pressing issue is not about personalities, but about the state of the nation itself:

“Peter Obi is not the issue. Nigeria is the issue.”

He underscored the importance of prioritizing long-term national progress over short-term political gains:

“It is unfortunate that our leaders only think of the next election, not the next generation.”

This quote critiques the current political culture, where immediate electoral victories are valued more than building a lasting foundation for the country’s future.

The former president also expressed concern about the neglect of Nigeria’s youth, who make up the majority of the population:

“More than 60% of Nigeria’s population are youths. What are the leaders doing about keeping their future?”

Ignoring the voices and needs of the youth, according to Obasanjo, is equivalent to ignoring the very fabric of society:

“Once you ignore the people, you ignore the society.”

He concluded with a powerful reminder:

“As long as we are not thinking of the next generation, we are destroying our future.”

For Obasanjo, the future of Nigeria’s youth is central to the country’s stability and development:

“The future of the youths and that of the next generation is paramount to me.”
