Nigerian Movie Industry Prepares for Academy Awards

The Nigerian Official Selection Committee (NOSC) for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) is calling on Nigerian filmmakers to submit their feature films for consideration in the International Feature Film (IFF) category of the 97th Annual Academy Awards (Oscars).

Accredited by AMPAS, the NOSC is tasked with selecting Nigeria’s official entry for the prestigious IFF Award. This award is given annually by the Academy to a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States, with at least 50% of its dialogue in a language other than English. To qualify, films must meet specific criteria set by the Academy, such as accurate English subtitles, compliance with certain shooting formats, and evidence of theatrical release. Detailed submission guidelines can be found on the NOSC website.

Despite previous efforts, Nigeria has yet to secure a spot on the IFF award shortlist. However, with acclaimed actress and filmmaker Stephanie Linus now at the helm of the NOSC, there is renewed optimism for a breakthrough, especially after the committee faced several controversies in the past.

In a move to strengthen its capabilities and achieve its goals, the committee has announced the induction of new members. Joining the ranks are the Managing Director of the Nigerian Film Corporation (NFC), Ali Nuhu; film producer and director Blessing Effiom Egbe; actress Ijeoma Grace Agu; Co-Founder and Group Chief Executive Officer of Filmhouse Cinemas, Kene Okwuosa; and journalist, author, and film critic, Victor Akande.

Stephanie Linus expressed confidence that the addition of these new members, each with a diverse creative background, will enhance the selection process for Nigeria’s best film entry. The committee will be responsible for collecting, screening, and voting on entries to represent Nigeria in the IFF category. The submission portal will be open from August 1, 2024, to August 30, 2024, on the NOSC website.

The 97th Oscars ceremony is scheduled for March 2, 2025, and will be broadcast live from the Dolby Theatre in Ovation Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, to audiences in over 200 territories worldwide.
