Nigerian Army Warns of Further Security Breach in Plateau Over Influx of Cattle into Farming Communities
Nigerian Army authorities have warned of looming security breach in Plateau State over an unprecedented influx of cattle herders into farming communities in the state.
In an urgent public statement made by Major General Folusho Oyinlola, the Commander of Operation Safe Haven (OPSH) and General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Division, Nigerian Army, Rukuba, a large number of cattle have invaded various farming communities in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of the state.
The GOC who was speaking at a townhall meeting stated that the scale and timing of the livestock movement into farming communities was unusual and alarming and a potent threat to security and food stability in the region.
According to the GOC, “There is a growing unease about the influx of large numbers of cattle into farming communities. While livestock movement is not new in Plateau, the scale and timing of this new influx raise legitimate security concerns.”

He noted that the consequences of such movement were far-reaching, warning that continued disruptions to farming activities could threaten food security, economic stability, and peaceful coexistence.
“Unfortunately, this development has already resulted in adverse outcomes, including farm destructions, isolated attacks, and attacks on livestock. The impact on food security, economic stability, and social harmony cannot be overemphasized.”
“The farming season is already ongoing, and for many families, this is a period for securing their livelihood. Any disruption now will have dire consequences.”
While condemning the resurgent killings in the area, the GOC assured stakeholders at the townhall engagement that those behind the attacks would be tracked down and prosecuted.
Oyinlola said the stakeholders’ meeting which was attended by security agencies, traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth groups and representatives of the state and local governments was part of broader efforts to ensure a safe and successful farming season across Barkin Ladi, stressing the urgent need for collective action.
