Nigeria Immigration Begins Contactless Biometric Passport Application System

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has announced the next phase of its Contactless Biometric Passport Application System rollout, extending its reach to Nigerian Missions in the United States, Mexico, Jamaica, and Brazil.

This initiative, spearheaded by the Comptroller General of Immigration, Kemi Nanna Nandap, is aimed at easing passport renewal processes for Nigerians living abroad by leveraging digital innovation.

According to a public notice signed by ACI AS Akinlabi, the Service Public Relations Officer at NIS Headquarters, the rollout dates for the new countries are as follows:

“In continuation of the phased Roll-Out of the Contactless Biometric Passport Application System, the Nigeria Immigration Service wishes to inform the General Public, especially Nigerians in the Diaspora, that it is implementing the next stage of the roll-out,” the notice stated.

The application system, already available on the Google Play Store under the name NIS Mobile, allows Nigerians to renew their passports without physically visiting a passport centre for biometric enrollment. An Apple Store version is in the works, and the Service has confirmed that an enhanced version of the app for both Android and iOS will soon be launched.

“With this roll-out,” the statement continued, “the Service further informs the General Public that the Contactless Passport App is now available in Canada, the USA, Mexico, Jamaica, Brazil, Europe, and Asia.”

However, the service noted that the application is yet to be rolled out in Australia and Nigeria, and that a future launch date will be announced in due course.

“The Service remains committed to innovative and efficient service delivery to Nigerians anywhere in the world,” ACI Akinlabi added.

This move marks another milestone in the NIS’s efforts to streamline passport services and ensure greater convenience for Nigerians living abroad.
