Nigeria Immigration Arrests 51 Irregular Migrants in Nasarawa

 

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has apprehended 51 irregular migrants of Malian origin on Monday, 31st March 2025, in the New Nyanya area of Karu Local Government, Nasarawa State.

The operation, carried out was based on credible intelligence, resulting in the arrest of 40 males and eleven 11 females, all aged between 16 and 19.

According to a statement released by the Service, Public Relations Officer. ACI AS Akinlabi, the preliminary investigations indicate that the migrants may have been victims of Trafficking in Persons (TIP) and Smuggling of Migrants (SOM). “These individuals were found without valid travel documents or residence permits, raising concerns about possible trafficking or smuggling activities.”

The arrested individuals are currently in NIS custody for further profiling and investigation. “Our aim is to determine the exact circumstances of their migration and to uncover any potential involvement of trafficking or smuggling networks,” Akinlabi said.

Reaffirming its commitment to national security, the NIS emphasized its ongoing efforts to combat irregular migration while ensuring the rights of legal migrants are upheld. “Nigeria Immigration Service remains steadfast in protecting the country’s borders against illegal migration. We continue to collaborate with relevant authorities and stakeholders to effectively counter human trafficking and smuggling of migrants.”

The Service also urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious migration activities to the nearest NIS commands and formations. “We reassure Nigerians of our unwavering commitment to national security and migration management,” Akinlabi concluded.

The NIS’s proactive stance in curbing illegal migration aligns with broader national and international efforts to combat human trafficking and ensure safe and legal migration pathways.
