As Nigeria intensifies efforts to combat insurgency and other criminal activities, the media and the military have been urged to foster a coordinated relationship to enhance national security.
The Director General, Nigerian Army Resource Centre (NARC), Maj.-Gen. Garba Wahab (Rtd.), made the appeal during a media roundtable in Abuja.
Speaking on the theme “National Interest versus National Security: A Quest for Responsible Journalism”, Wahab emphasized the need to bridge observed gaps in military-media relations and build trust for the overall good of the nation.
He stressed that both parties must find common ground to promote national security while ensuring responsible reportage.
“Both parties need to find a way of moving ahead, and that is why the centre is engaging the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) and the services to address the gaps identified by media practitioners, particularly defence correspondents,” he said.
The retired general highlighted the critical role of media owners in shaping public perception and protecting national interests, adding that the Nigerian Guild of Editors and defence correspondents form the bedrock of success in the media-military partnership.
“There is a need for media practitioners to be mindful of their reportage, putting national security into consideration,” he added.
He further stressed the importance of engaging media owners, editors, and reporters at various levels to ensure seamless communication and alignment on issues of national security.
“The owners of these organisations, the guild of editors, and correspondents must work in synergy with the military to project national interest and protect national security,” Wahab said.
The roundtable provided a platform for stakeholders to deliberate on strengthening military-media collaboration in addressing national security challenges
