Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet has broken the world record in the women’s 5,000 metres, clocking an astonishing 13 minutes, 58.06 seconds to win the event at the Prefontaine Classic on Saturday.
Chebet became the first woman in history to run the distance in under 14 minutes, surpassing the previous world record of fourteen minutes, zero point two one seconds which was set by Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay at the same competition in 2023.

In a remarkable day for Kenyan athletics, Faith Kipyegon also set a new world record in the 1,500 metres, finishing in 3 minutes, 48.68 seconds.
Kipyegon, a three-time Olympic champion, broke her own record of three minutes, 49.04, which she had set last July ahead of the Paris Games.
