Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau Says He’ll Not Step Down Now, Suspends Parliament Till March 24
Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau has announced that he will step down as soon as a new replacement for him is found. Trudeau ho spoke to the media in Ottawa on Monday reminded Canadians that he is a “fighter” indicating that he will hang on till his party recovers from any possible defeat.
The Canadian leader also indicated that the parliament will remain suspended till March 24, 2025 when a confidence vote will be cast to determine the future of the Liberal party leadership in the country.
Trudeau also took a jab at the leader of the Conservative Party, Pierre Poilievre saying Mr. Poilievre cannot offer a better alternative to Canadians.
He said, “Pierre Poilievre, his vision for this country, is not the right one for Canadians. Stopping the fight against climate change doesn’t make sense.”
“We need an ambitious, optimistic view of the future. And Pierre Poilievre is not offering that.”
Opposition lawmakers and politicians had planned to oust Trudeau on January 27 when the parliament was earlier scheduled to reopen.
Below is a text of part of the media briefing:
“I’m a fighter. Every bone in my body has always told me to fight because I care deeply about Canadians.”
“And the fact is, despite best efforts to work through it, Parliament has been paralyzed for months.”
“That’s why this morning I advised the Governor-General that we need a new session of Parliament. She has granted this request and the House will now be prorogued until March 24th.”
“Over the holidays, I’ve also had a chance to reflect and have had long talks with my family about our future.”
“I intend to resign as party leader, as Prime Minister, after the party selects its next leader through a robust nationwide competitive process.”
“This country deserves a real choice in the next election, and it has become clear to me that if I’m having to fight internal battles, I cannot be the best option in that election.”
“A new Prime Minister and leader of the Liberal Party will carry its values and ideals into that next election. I’m excited to see the process unfold in the months ahead.”
“I do wish that we’d been able to change the way we elect our governments … but I could not change unilaterally, without support of other parties, our electoral system, that wouldn’t have been responsible.”
