House Reps to Engage Leaders of Political Parties on Constitution Review on Monday

 

The House of Representatives Committee on Constitution Review (HCCR) will on Monday hold a “consultative” meeting with leaders of registered political parties in Nigeria.

The meeting is part of the ongoing engagement with various sections of the country and interest group as the National Assembly seeks to alter the 1999 constitution.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday, the spokesman of the House, Hon. Akin Rotimi Jr., the Deputy Speaker, Hon Benjamin Kalu led committee  will deliberate on priority areas including “ Special Seats for Women, Judicial and Electoral Reforms, Independent Candidacy, Local Government Reforms, State Policing, Human Rights, and Justice.”

The Deputy Speaker was quoted as describing the meeting as a strategic platform for political parties to bring their experience and institutional insight to the process.

According to him, “political parties remain the engine room of our democracy, and their active participation in this consultation is vital to achieving constitutional amendments that are inclusive, credible, and reflective of the collective aspirations of Nigerians.”

Those expected at the meeting according to the House Spokesman are “leaders of registered political parties invited to participate include National Chairmen, National Secretaries, and National Women Leaders.”

Hon Rotimi Jr advised all intending participants to download a  “summarised compendium of the bills currently under consideration by the Committee has been prepared to guide discussions during the engagement. The document is available for download at hccr.gov.ng.”
