The House of Representatives will today flag-off the 11th Annual Conference and General Assembly of the West Africa Association of Public Accounts Committees (WAAPAC) in Abuja.
The event being hosted by the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of the House of Representatives will last from Monday, September 8, to Friday, September 12, 2025.
Themed “Strengthening Parliamentary Oversight of Public Debt: The Role of Finance and Public Accounts Committees,” the gathering will focus on empowering PACs and Finance Committees across West Africa to promote transparency, fiscal discipline, and debt sustainability in the interest of citizens.
Delegates will include Lawmakers, Parliamentary Staff, and Auditors-General from West African nations, alongside representatives from eSwatini, Kenya, South Africa, and sister parliamentary networks such as AFROPAC and SADCOPAC. Esteemed experts in public finance, fiscal policy, and parliamentary oversight from within and beyond the region will also share insights during the event.

According to a statement issued in Abuja on Monday by the Spokesman of the House, Hon. Akin Rotimi Jr. the chief host and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, will formally declare the conference open by 9am on Monday.
Following the Opening Ceremony, the Conference will thereafter continue daily at 9:00 a.m. at the National Assembly Complex, Abuja
Speaking on the significance of the conference, the Chairman House Committee on Public Account, Hon. Bamidele Salaam, explained that “Nigeria is pleased to be hosting WAAPAC in Abuja this year. It is an opportunity to showcase our country while convening one of the most impactful sub-regional conferences on parliamentary oversight in the world.”
Hon, Salam noted that the conference “will be an avenue for learning and engagement among committees, and an opportunity to exchange knowledge and experiences.”
The General Assembly will deliberate on debt trends, parliamentary roles in debt governance, and strategies to achieve sustainability. The conference is expected to conclude with country-specific action plans to strengthen legislative oversight and promote responsible public finance practices.
