... Says democracy has come to stay in Nigeria

Senator Anthony Ani, the lawmaker representing Ebonyi South in the Senate has declared that has come to stay in Nigeria having run uninterruptedly in the last 26 years.

Senator Ani who spoke to journalists on Thursday at the National Assembly when President Bola Tinubu addressed a joint sitting the parliament commended President Tinubu for honouring Nigerians that made indelible impact in the struggle to enthrone democracy in Nigeria including Prof Humphrey Nwosu who supervised the freest and most credible election in Nigeria’s modern electoral history.

Praising the exploits of late Prof Nwosu, Senator Ani described him as a  “courageous man of integrity” who stood his ground in the face of threats from military top brass. He noted that the fact that June 12 has now been institutionalised as Democracy Day in Nigeria is a living testimony of the role of the late professor of political science

He said:

“I am happy with what the president has done today (Thursday), some Nigerians then were resolved to enthrone democracy in Nigeria and late Humphrey Nwosu championed the course as the then chairman of NEC. He was courageous and a man of integrity who confronted the military to make sure the elections were held despite attempts to stop it, by the then military president Ibrahim Babangida led government.

“As you’re aware, Babaginda has confessed that Abiola really won the election and that Nwosu was determined to announce the result if not that he was held by the military.

Meanwhile, June 12 has been institutionalized and democracy has come to stay in Nigeria and I’m happy about that.”
