Gunmen Kill Ogun Govt House Accountant, Cart away Millions

Yet to be identified gunmen has killed the Ogun State Government House Accountant, Taiwo Oyekanmi and escaped with a large sum of money the victim had just withdrawn from a bank.

The incident which happened in Abeokuta, the state capital has left staff of the government in confusion and mourning.

The late Oyekanmi was the Director of Finance and Accounts at the Governor’s Office. According to sources at the Government House, Oyekanmi had gone to a branch of Fidelity Bank in the city and after he had made the withdrawal of yet to be determined large sum of money, the gunmen numbering about five allegedly followed his car until he got to the popular Kuto under bridge where they struck and shot him dead at point blank range and made away with the money he had just withdrawn from the bank.

The Ogun State Commissioner of Police (CP),  Abiodun Alamutu who confirmed the incident revealed that the accountant was with a driver and one other person and drove a home-made bullion van. The CP said that it was unfortunate noting that the accountant should have gone to the bank with security escourt.

He said:

“They were supposed to have a police escort, but for certain reasons, the person was permitted to travel to attend to some issues. So, consequently he was not part of the movement.

“According to the report, after making the withdrawal and on their way back to the office, they were accosted

“A vehicle blocked them on top of the bridge, five occupants of the vehicle came down, shot at the director and from their vehicle brought out a sledgehammer to force the receptacle where the money was kept open, and they left with the money.

“As at that time, there was no information, the police escort was not with the team and they sped off.

“The driver claimed to have trailed them to a point near the Conference Hotel where he lost contact with them.”

Speaking to journalists about the response of the police, CP Alamutu disclosed that he had directed top police detectives to unravel those behind the crime and that he has alerted other police commands including that of neighboring  Lagos State.

“There is a possibility of identifying the culprits if they ever ventured to step out of the vehicle or maybe they just maintained their position in the vehicle

“I have reached out to Lagos and everywhere in the command to block all the exits out of the state while we are trying to identify them because they said they were five, and they used hood,” he said.
