Gunmen Kill 17 in Easter Sunday Attack on Benue Community

Tragedy struck on Easter Sunday as no fewer than 17 persons were reportedly killed in a deadly attack on Mbalom community in Gwer East Local Government Area of Benue State, according to local residents.
Eyewitness accounts revealed that heavily armed assailants stormed the agrarian community in the early hours of the day, unleashing terror on unsuspecting residents who were observing the Christian celebration. The attackers reportedly opened fire indiscriminately, leaving scores dead and several others injured.
Residents said the violence caused panic and chaos, forcing many to flee their homes into nearby bushes for safety. Some victims were said to have been attacked while returning from Easter church services, deepening the shock and grief within the community.
Local sources disclosed that the death toll could rise as search efforts continue for missing persons. Several homes were also reportedly razed during the assault, compounding the humanitarian crisis in the area.
Community leaders have condemned the attack, describing it as barbaric and a direct assault on peace and religious observance. They called on security agencies to intensify efforts to apprehend the perpetrators and prevent further bloodshed.
As of the time of filing this report, authorities were yet to issue an official statement on the incident. However, security operatives are said to have been deployed to the area to restore calm and commence investigations.
The attack adds to the growing concerns over insecurity in parts of Benue State, where recurring clashes and armed attacks have continued to claim lives and displace residents.
