Four Nigerian University Students in UK Sentenced to Prison for Violent Knife Attack

Four Nigerian students of De Montfort University in the United Kingdom have been sentenced to prison for their involvement in a violent knife fight in Leicester City in 2021.

The students identified as Destiny Ojo, Habib Lawal, Ridwanulahi Raheem, and Joshua Davies-Ero were involved in a violent group attack that took place on November 4, 2021 on New Park Street that left one person  seriously injured.

According to a report posted on Leicestershire Police website, a “complex investigation” led to the arrest and trial of the four men for the “violent disorder.”

The police report revealed that, “The fight, which broke out during the early hours of Thursday 4 November 2021, involved weapons being used including knives and a baseball bat. A man, who was 18 at the time, suffered stab wound injuries in the incident requiring hospital treatment.”

The culprits were later discovered through CCTV footage, phone tracking and appeals from the public.  The incident according to the police took place around 3am when two groups of young people engaged in a street fight that resulted in a bodily injury on one man who was 18 years at that time.

The convicts were sentenced as follows:

“Destiny Ojo, 21, of Warland Road, Plumstead, London, was sentenced to seven years imprisonment after being found guilty of violent disorder, attempted grievous bodily harm and committing grievous bodily harm with intent

“Habib Lawal, 21, of Lumley Close, Bexley, London, was sentenced to five years imprisonment after being found guilty of violent disorder, attempted grievous bodily harm and committing grievous bodily harm with intent

“Ridwanulahi Raheem, 21, of George Mathers Road, Lambeth, London, was sentenced to three years imprisonment after being found guilty of violent disorder and possession of a bladed article

“Joshua Davies-Ero, 21, of Springfield Road, Bexley, London, was sentenced to two years imprisonment after being found guilty of violent disorder.

 

A 5th suspect, identified as Justin Asamoah, 22 who had earlier pleaded guilty for possession of “bladed article” is set to be sentenced on November 22, 2024.

 

Knife attacks is a rampant crime in the UK with London according figures published by German based data company, Statista indicating that London alone recorded 15, 016 knife attacks between 2023 and 2024 more that 3000 cases above the previous years record that stood at 12, 786 knife attacks.
