Court Grants Prosecutor Leave to Reopen Case in Trial of Ousted PDP Factional Chairman Tanimu Turaki

A Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court sitting in Abuja has granted the request by the prosecution in the ongoing trial of a Mr. Tanimu Kabiru Turaki, SAN of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to reopen its case and call additional witnesses.
Turaki is being prosecuted on one-count charge brought against him by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), and in which he is accused of, among others, giving false information to the police.
On October 14, 2026 the prosecuting lawyer, Usman Aliyu moved an application for leave to enable the prosecution reopen its case, call additional witnesses and adduce more evidence, a request the defence lawyer, Abdulaziz Ibrahim (SAN), countered.
In ruling on Monday, Justice Peter Kekemeke held that the application was meritorious and proceeded to grant it.
Justice Kekemeke asked the prosecution to call its additional witness if they were available in court.
Aliyu said none of the prosecution’s additional witnesses was present in court and sought for a short adjournment to enable him produce them.
The judge subsequently adjourned further hearing till to January 27,2027.
Aliyu had, while arguing the application, said the additional witnesses and evidence were needed for the just prosecution of the case.
The prosecuting lawyer, who cited a number of authorities in support of his position, prayed the court to grant the application in the interest of justice.
The prosecution closed its case on June 18,2026 after calling a single witness in the matter.
