The National Council of State has expressed confidence in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, praising Nigerians for opposing unconstitutional attempts to change the government.
After a four-hour meeting at the State House Council Chamber on Tuesday, Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, reported that the council unanimously supported President Tinubu’s administration. The meeting saw the physical presence of former Presidents Muhammadu Buhari and Goodluck Jonathan, while former Heads of State Yakubu Gowon and Abdulsalam Abubakar joined virtually.
Alake highlighted that seven cabinet members presented their roadmaps, discussing achievements, prospects, and challenges, with a focus on economic diversification. He emphasized that the council’s discussions were thorough and included briefings from the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, on security measures related to recent protests.
Alake described the protests as an insurrection aimed at forcefully changing the government and commended Nigerians for their resistance to such unconstitutional actions. He underscored that changes in government should occur through elections, not violence.
Kwara State Governor Abdulrazaq Abdulrahman, Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, confirmed that the governors also passed a vote of confidence on President Tinubu, expressing satisfaction with his administration’s performance over the past 14 months.
The Council of State, which last met on February 10, 2023, under former President Buhari, is composed of the sitting president, vice president, all living former Heads of State and Presidents, former Chief Justices of Nigeria, the President of the Senate, Speaker of the House of Representatives, all state governors, and the Attorney-General of the Federation.
