Ballon d’Or Night: My Nomination is ‘Special’ -Ademola Lookman

Nigeria’s international football star, Ademola Lookman will later this night (Monday) be the only African nominee in this year’s Ballon d’Or ceremony in Paris, France.

Speaking to the BBC on his nomination, Lookman “It’s special being on the list and even more special being the only African.”

“We have achieved great things this year, with club and country. To be recognised as one of the contenders is a great achievement.”

The 27-year-old Atalanta star,  displayed a spectacular performance in Atalanta’s 6-1 victory on Saturday, as he scored twice and provided two assists before he was substituted in the 56th minute of the game.

Lookman dazzled in the 2023 Africa Nations Cup tournament where Nigeria won silver, losing to the host Ivory Coast.

The forward also made history as the first player to score a hat-trick in a European final since 1975, his effort helped Atalanta to their first-ever Europa League triumph against Bayer Leverkusen.

Lookman told BBC,  “The way we did it was incredible because Leverkusen were on fire that season. Those are the moments you wish and dream for.”

Africa’s hope will today be rested on the 27-year old Nigerian as the best footballers in the world will be announced in Paris. For many, the fact that Lookman is on the shortlist is already a hope that the days are bright ahead.
