The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Lagos (UNILAG) chapter, has announced an indefinite strike following what it described as “amputated” salaries paid to its members for January and February 2026.

The decision was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of an emergency congress of the union held on Tuesday. The communiqué was jointly signed by the branch chairperson, Idou Kehinde, and the secretary, Adesina Arikawe.

According to the union, the industrial action will commence on Wednesday and will remain in force until the university management addresses the concerns raised by the lecturers regarding the salary discrepancies.

ASUU-UNILAG stated that the salaries paid to its members for the months of January and February were significantly reduced without adequate explanation, a development the union said has caused widespread dissatisfaction among academic staff.

The union described the development as unacceptable and called on the university authorities to urgently rectify the situation to avoid further disruption to academic activities.

“The congress resolved that the branch should embark on an indefinite strike starting from Wednesday until the university management addresses the issue of the amputated salaries and other related concerns,” the communiqué stated.

The lecturers also urged the management of the University of Lagos to engage in meaningful dialogue with the union to ensure that the issue is resolved promptly.

The strike action is expected to affect academic activities at the institution, potentially disrupting lectures, research work and other academic engagements if the dispute is not resolved swiftly.
