JUST IN: Supreme Court Nullifies National Lottery Act, Says State Assemblies to Legislate for States
The Supreme Court has nullified the National Lottery Act 2005 enacted by the National Assembly.
A seven-man panel of the apex court while ruling on a suit filed by the Lagos State Government in 2008 unanimously held that the National Assembly lacked the powers to legislate on issues relating to lottery and games of chance.
The judgement was delivered by Justice Mohammed Idris who headed the seven-man panel. According to the Jurist, only the various state Houses of Assembly cam legislate on lottery and such games of chance for their respective states.
The court held that henceforth, the National Lottery Act may only be enforced in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
