IWD 2024: Senate Celebrates Nigerian Women, Acknowledges their Contributions to Nation-building
The President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, principal officers and other distinguished colleagues on Thursday joined their female colleagues to mark the year 2024 international women’s day.
March 8 became the day internationally observed to call attention to the plight of women all over the world after a proposal for an International Women’s Day proposed at a global working women’s conference in Copenhagen in 1910 by German Women’s Office leader for the Social Democratic Party, Clara Zetkin.
The idea was unanimously approved, leading to the first observance in 1911 in several European countries, with over a million participants advocating for women’s rights.
The theme of this year’s event is “Invest in women: accelerate progress”.
Sen Akpabio led the Senate leadership to join the five female Senators among the 109 Senators, Senator Natasha Akpoti Uduaghan, Senator Idiat Adebule, Senator Ipalibo Harry Banigo, and Senator Ireti Kingibe, to mark the event in his office at the National Assembly.
Earlier in a statement he personally issued to commemorate the day, Senator Akpabio, acknowledged the contributions of Nigerian women in the various aspects of our national life. He said, “On behalf of the Senate and the esteemed members of the Senate, we extend our heartfelt appreciation, acknowledging the unwavering support and invaluable contributions made by Nigerian women to our great nation, Nigeria.”
