Describing the airport as a cornerstone of his administration’s development agenda, Governor Ododo emphasized that the initiative is aimed at repositioning Kogi as a strategic gateway for commerce, investment, and transportation. He assured the contractors of the state government’s full support, noting that their selection followed due process and transparency.

The governor also credited Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving the project, highlighting its alignment with the Federal Government’s broader push to expand Nigeria’s aviation infrastructure. According to Ododo, the new airport is designed to complement the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport by serving as an alternative hub to ease air traffic pressure in Abuja.

He noted that Kogi’s central geographic location positions it as a natural transit corridor linking the northern and southern parts of the country. The airport, he said, will unlock economic opportunities in agriculture, mining, and trade, while also generating employment for residents.

Providing further insight, the Commissioner for Transportation, Victor Atuluku, disclosed that groundwork for the project was completed during the 2025 fiscal year, including detailed planning and design. He explained that CCECC will handle the construction of the runway and terminal infrastructure, while Gamji Nigeria Limited will oversee the installation of perimeter security systems.
The Zariagi International Airport is expected to feature a 3.6-kilometre runway capable of accommodating wide-body and cargo aircraft. Spanning approximately 4,000 hectares with room for future expansion, the facility is projected to handle up to 250,000 passengers annually. It will also include dedicated cargo facilities to strengthen logistics and trade operations within the state and beyond.

Representatives of the contracting firms expressed confidence in delivering the project on schedule and in accordance with international standards, describing it as a transformative initiative that could position Kogi as a major regional aviation and logistics hub.
