As controversy continues to rage over media reports indicating that the Nigerian Senate on Wednesday jettisoned the electronic transmission of election results, FACTSHEET authoritatively reports that in the contrary, the Senate rather approved electronic transmission of election results to the IREV platform of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
According the Senate Report of the Senate Committee on Electoral Matters on the bill titled: “Report on a Bill for an Act to Repeal the Electoral Act 2022, And Enact the Electoral Bill 2025 and for Other Related Matters (SB.903)” dated February 2026 seen by FACTSHEET, the Senate in Clause 60 (3) provides that, “the presiding officer shall electronically transmit the results from each polling unit to IREV portal in real time and such transmission shall be done after the prescribed form EC8A has been signed and stamped by the presiding officer and /or countersigned by the by the candidates or polling agents where available at the polling unit.”
Also, section 60 (4) provides that “the presiding officer shall count and announce the result at the polling unit,” while section 60(5) provides that, “the presiding officer shall transmit the result including total number of accredited voters to the next level of collation.”
Whereas in the Electoral Act 2022, section 60 (1) provides that “the presiding officer shall, after counting the votes, at the polling unit , enter the votes scored by each candidate in a form to be prescribed by the Commission as the case may be.”

Section 60(2) provides that “the form shall be signed and stamped by the presiding officer and counter signed by the candidates or their polling agents where available at the poling unit.”
60(3) provides that “the presiding officer shall give to the polling agents and the police officer where available a copy each of the completed forms after it has been duly signed as provided under subsection (2).”
