EXCLUSIVE: Nigerian Senate Approves Mandatory Electronic Transmission of Result to IREV

As controversy continues to rage over media reports indicating that the Nigerian Senate on Wednesday jettisoned the electronic transmission of election results, FACTSHEET authoritatively  reports that in the contrary, the Senate rather  approved electronic transmission of election results to the IREV platform of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). 

 

According the Senate Report of the Senate Committee on Electoral Matters on the bill titled: “Report on a Bill for an Act to Repeal  the Electoral Act 2022, And Enact the Electoral Bill 2025 and for Other Related Matters  (SB.903)” dated February 2026  seen by FACTSHEET, the Senate in Clause 60 (3) provides that, “the presiding officer shall electronically  transmit  the results  from each polling unit to IREV portal in real time and such transmission  shall be done  after the prescribed  form EC8A has been signed  and stamped  by the presiding officer  and /or countersigned  by the by the candidates or polling agents where available at the polling unit.”

Also, section 60 (4) provides that “the presiding officer shall count and announce the result  at the polling unit,” while section 60(5) provides that, “the presiding officer shall transmit the result  including total number of accredited voters to the next level  of collation.”

 

 

Whereas in the Electoral Act 2022, section 60 (1)  provides that “the presiding officer  shall,  after counting the votes,  at the polling unit , enter the votes  scored by each  candidate  in a form  to be prescribed  by the Commission as the case may be.”

Section 60(2) provides that “the form shall be signed and stamped by the presiding officer  and counter signed  by the  candidates  or their polling  agents  where available  at the poling unit.”

 

60(3) provides that “the presiding officer shall give to the polling  agents and the police officer where available  a copy each  of the completed forms  after it has been duly signed as provided under subsection (2).”  

 

 

FINDING: Nigerian Senate did not delete electronic transmission of election result in the ongoing amendment of the Electoral Act 2022.
