The Chairman Senate Committee on Science and Technology, Senator Iya Abbas has said that approval of Nigeria’s first national satellite project by President Bola Tinubu marks a significant milestone in the efforts to strengthen the country’s security, weather forecasting, and technological capabilities.
Sen. Abbas who spoke to journalists at the National Assembly on Tuesday while highlighting the committee’s major gains in 2025despite the paucity of funds. According to the lawmaker, “the Senate Committee on Science and Technology
has made significant strides in 2025, including the approval of a satellite project by the President, which is expected to enhance Nigeria’s security and forecasting capabilities. The National Board for Technology Incubation has established 59 technology incubation centers across the country.”
He, however, noted that “the committee faces major challenges, particularly in funding, with delays in the release of capital funds for 2024 and 2025. The local raw material bill has been passed by both chambers and awaits the President’s signature.”
The lawmaker stated that “the committee is poised to make significant progress once funding is secured,” noting that science and technology remains the bedrock of every modern nation.
