The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the United Nigeria Airline, Dr. Obiora Okonkwo has stepped down from the position ahead of his joining the Anambra State governorship race.
In a terse statement shared on the airline’s social media platforms on Monday evening, the fast rising Nigerian carrier extoled the “visionary leadership” of the Ogidi born business mogul.
“Our Chairman steps down, leaving behind a legacy of visionary leadership. Your impact will be felt for years to come, and you will be truly missed. Thank you for your leadership over the years,” the statement read.
Dr. Okonkwo on Friday January 31, 2025 in a ceremony held at his expansive Ogidi country home announced his intention to contest the November 8, 2025 governorship election in Anambra State on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Announcing his interest, Dr. Okonkwo said he was pained by the desolation and lack of progress in a state like Anambra which according to him “deserves the best.” He promised to work with the people to ensure engender a prosperous state that everyone can be proud of.
He said:
“The pains and horror of insecurity have left our people living in the bondage of fear. People earnestly cry for real security and progress.
“With a deep sense of responsibility, and unwavering commitment to the future of our dear Anambra State, today I declare my intention to contest the forthcoming governorship election.
“I believe Anambra deserves the best. Together, we can build a state that truly works for everyone; a state where governance is about service to the people and not to self,”
“I cannot do it alone. I need your support; together, we can make Anambra a shining example of excellence and good governance.
“I pledge to prioritise the welfare and well-being of our people, particularly the youths, women and the vulnerable populations.
“My vision on this movement is to build an Anambra that is prosperous, secure, and globally competitive.
“No society can thrive without security and accountable leadership. We will work closely together with security agencies, invest in community policing and ensure efficiency in government.
The APC has pegged the governorship expression of interest and nominations forms at N50 million in the Southeast state.
